Space Wars -
Lessons in Adaptive Strategy from the Race to Space

Workshop Introduction
There is now renewed interest in the new race to space with the recent successful human space-flights of Blue Origin, Virgin Galactic and earlier, SpaceX. The race to space has been intensely battled over the past sixty years, ever since the original Apollo missions to the moon in the 1960s.
“Space Wars” offer Leaders an opportunity to learn from some of the greatest accomplishments of all time, due to the sheer audacity, complexity, technical difficulty and unpredictability of these daring space missions. The management challenges these organisations have faced encompass the breadth and depth of strategic, operational and organisational obstacles, all of which need to be overcome to ensure success. Critical to overcoming these obstacles is the ability to rapidly adapt strategies to conquer novel problems as they arise.
The Space War Series captures the innumerable strategy lessons embedded in the evolution of the space industry and the competitive-cooperative race between nations and organisations to conquer space.

This workshop series is entirely case study-based, highly interactive and discussion-led and helps organisations to understand the transformational challenges faced in the race to space, with learnings that could be transferred to your organisation. These four workshops each run over a half-day from 9.30am-1pm on Zoom, as set out below:

Disrupting Ecosystems

Leadership in the face of a complex adaptive challenge requires a dramatic organisational renewal. The case studies will showcase one of the greatest organisational transformations of all times, as well as the agility with which an unforeseen crisis can be overcome.

This Case Study highlights the importance of collaboration across functions, levels, locations and organisational ecosystems. Jay will facilitate an interactive discussion with the participants and explain why enterprise-wide collaboration is critical for high performing complex organisations.

In this Case Study Jay will facilitate an interactive discussion with the participants and explain why enterprise-wide leadership is critical for organisations to be able to see and anticipate warning signals of a possible crisis and respond rapidly before the crisis becomes a catastrophic disaster.

This workshop centers around the recent dramatic disruption of the space business ecosystem by radical thinkers from outside the industry. Jay will debate and discuss with participants the key elements that have allowed these disruptors to succeed and transform the space industry.
